STATEMENT REGARDING "SPECTRE" AND "MELTDOWN" VULNERABILITIES

On 3/1/2018 (last week) news broke in the media of two security vulnerabilities which will impact almost every computing device in active use today. Named “Spectre” and “Meltdown”, the vulnerabilities arise because of design flaws in CPUs from Intel, AMD, Qualcomm and ARM which have existed for decades – and they’re important because they allow access to information in memory that should be out of reach, whether that’s passwords, keys or other data.

It’s a sight that has become all too familiar this winter. Strong winds, flooded streets and fallen trees. Storm Imogen is another name to add to the list of uncharacteristically extreme weather in the UK. The Independent claims that the cost to the UK economy of the flooding over the Christmas period could reach £6bn. “Economists have predicted that the recent flooding will hit Britain’s GDP by 0.2 per cent due to businesses being forced to close, loss of agriculture output, and people not being able to go shopping and travel.”
